John has developed a Not-For-Profit arm of 3 Sons Fitness, working with disadvantaged youth through the gym, providing them with a safe place to exercise and clear their mind a place to just be and take a break from their realities.
Some of these kids come from gang backgrounds, where drugs and alcohol are prevalent in the household and/or with their own substance abuse. With these things comes so many obstacles, coming in the gym, John helps them navigate through life or just to talk and get through the day. The bonds with the kids takes time to develop, even years sometimes, to prove there are people they can count on, and provide them with the guidance to lead a healthy lifestyle and supporting themselves in the workforce.
He volunteers his time to help kids wanting to have make a career out of being a professional sportsperson. He is currently running a free blackhawks academy with the support of the Mendi Blackhawks in for kids to have access to training otherwise unavailable to them, showing them a way out through sport.
He works with PCYC to connect indigenous youth with employment opportunities within the community and local businesses with great success, continuing the relationship by mentoring the youth/men that have gained employment and being that support and middleman between business owner and employee.
John plays a massive role model for indigenous youth in the community, being proactive on indigenous issues and being seen as a business owner. It show them it is possible to be a man of colour and own a business and be your own boss. Being so remote the kids have limited access to what they see out here in terms of role models and opportunities.
